Gush Katif Chabad Emissary Told He Won't Be Compensated

From Israel National News:

By Ezra HaLevi

The rabbi who ran the Chabad House in N’vei Dekalim was informed this week that he and his family will not be receiving compensation for their eviction and the demolition of their home.

Rabbi Yigal Kirshenzaft received a letter this week from the Disengagement Authority informing him that his family is not eligible for compensation, with out further explanation offered.

Just several weeks prior to the expulsion, Kirshenzaft was hit in the neck by shrapnel from a Kassam rocket and wounded in his back and stomach. He recovered quickly and went on to be a vocal leader of the struggle against the Disengagement.

He, his wife and their twelve children are currently living in Jerusalem’s Caeser Hotel, where their room has been broken into and valuables, including the rabbi’s computer, stolen.

Kirshenzaft fears that the decision to deprive him and his family of compensation was made due to the intense anti-expulsion activism that he and his family took part in prior to their forced eviction, including convincing neighbors not to leave voluntarily in response to threats of withheld compensation.

The Chabad rabbi was one of the most outspoken proponents of an active protest struggle against the expulsion, even when many of his neighbors were advocating only passive resistance. The night before the forced eviction, Rabbi Kirshenzaft addressed N’vei Dekalim residents, together with the thousands of youth that had snuck past the blockade around the region, and declared that physical opposition to the expulsion must take place. Kirshenzaft encouraged the youth to puncture the tires of buses used by the army to take them away.

The rabbi told a Chabad web site that this is the only possible reason for the “Expulsion Authority” to refuse to reimburse his family for what was taken from them.

The Disengagement Authority has not responded to Arutz-7 requests for clarification as to why the Kirshenzafts are being denied compensation.

Kirshenzaft was sent to be the Chabad emissary in Gush Katif by the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson after being forcibly evicted from Yamit following the Israeli agreement with Egypt.
