Eleven (not 8) days of Chanukah Chanukah Wonderlands in three venues

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

Chabad Lubavitch groups in Montgomery County and in Northern Virginia are inviting all families with young children to attend the respective groups' 11-day Chanukah Wonderland family festival, to start this Sunday.

Chanukah Wonderlands will be available at three different sites in Greater Washington ‹ Rockville, Gaithersburg and Vienna.

Explaining the purpose behind the Chanukah Wonderland concept, "particularly this year that the Chanukah holiday coincides precisely with the general holiday season," Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, director of programs for Chabad of Maryland, said, "we felt it was very necessary to provide parents with an exciting Jewish alternative for their children."

"Our goal is to strengthen the pride and identity of Jewish children during this season while letting them have fun at the same time," he added. "This is the ultimate answer for the age-old question that Jewish parents have struggled with for so many years: 'What can I do with my children during the holiday season without compromising my culture and faith?' "

Rabbi Levi Deitsch of Chabad of Tysons Corner put it another way: "For 11 days in December, the Chanukah Wonderland will provide Jewish families in the area with the opportunity of celebrating their Judaism in a very hands-on and engaging manner."

Each venue will have its own schedule of programs and performances for children.

Chabad of Maryland is hosting the Rockville Chanukah Wonderland, which will be the largest of the three, utilizing 3,000 square-feet of space at 5546 Randolph Rd. (next to the Staples store, off of Rockville Pike). Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, the festival will feature a "Multimedia Dreidel House," a Chanukah Theatre, a giant Chanukah board game, a Chanukah gift store and Chanukah cafe, computer fun, olive oil press demonstrations, music, magic, balloons and a variety of entertainment and performances for children of all ages.

Admission for adults is free, but a fee of $5 per child includes all activities and shows.

A free outdoor menorah lighting will be held each evening, at which music, doughnuts and a children's raffle will also be offered.

Chabad of Upper Montgomery County will host the Chanukah Wonderland in Gaithersburg, in the Kentlands Shopping Center, 118 Market St., and feature many of the same attractions as Rockville's festival, such as the olive oil press demonstration, craft activities, games and high-tech computer center. Plus, "Judah the Maccabi" will be on hand to greet children.

And, on Tuesday, Dec. 27, beginning at 6 p.m., the Menorah Fire Truck will visit Gaithersburg neighborhoods, distributing dreidels and chocolate gelt, after which all may attend a Chanukah party featuring an 8-foot balloon menorah.

Activities designed especially for children with special needs, noted Rabbi Cheski Tenenbaum of Chabad of Upper Montgomery County, will be available Monday, Dec. 26, through Thursday, Dec. 29, from 1 to 3 p.m.

General hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, with Friday closing time at noon. Admission is free for adults and children.
