Nanook of the North Bay noticed last Wednesday's business section story that cremations are selling like hotcakes. "You get this argument that burial is big and ugly and corporate and fat and it's the Cadillac,'' said Stephen Prothero, a Boston University professor of religion. "Cremation is hip and new and happening. It's the VW bug with the 'small is beautiful' kind of thing.'' But cremation's a no-no for Jewish people. Tattoos, too. So how's a person supposed to stay hip? Maybe it's relevant to know that Rabbi Joseph Langer, executive director of Chabad in San Francisco, celebrated his 60th birthday and Purim at Ruby Skye on Monday.
