The Broward Chai Center will host a big party on Sunday to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim.
The 24th annual South Florida Hasidic Pre-Purim Festival will begin at 6 p.m. at 1295 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach. There will be free rides, a barbecue, live music and a masquerade contest for adults and children.
The festival, organized by Chabad of South Broward, had taken place for 22 years at Young Circle Park in downtown Hollywood. With the space under construction for the city's new ArtsPark, the festival moved last year to McArthur High School, also in Hollywood.
''This year, we thought we would bring the festival closer to home,'' said Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, executive vice president of Chabad of South Broward, which is headquartered at the Broward Chai Center.
About 2,000 people are expected to attend the activities, which will run until about 10 p.m. Along with a new location, for the first time in the festival's history the masquerade contest has been expanded to have a category for adults, Tennenhaus said.
Purim will be officially observed at sundown Monday. The holiday commemorates the courage of Queen Esther, who risked her life to expose an evil plot to destroy the Jews of Persia.
The pre-Purim festival has become a well-received tradition by many Jewish residents. The event draws both the observant and the unaffiliated, Tennenhaus said.
''It's a kaleidoscope of people from all walks of life,'' he said. ``It unifies the Jewish community.''
