Joining the recent debate over whether adherents to Chabad-Lubavitch Chasidism are friendly, genial and well-intentioned eccentrics or sinister Martians poised to take over our fair planet, the Jerusalem Post delivers one of its scary five-page articles on recent stresses in the Chabad movement as the official leadership of Chabad distances itself from both outright meshichism and physical protest to the disengagement on the part of its Chasidim in Israel.

Others in Chabad, who prefer to remain anonymous, say a large percentage of newcomers to the movement, especially non-Ashkenazim, tend to be mashichistim and virulently anti-disengagement.
“These people have a tremendous belief in spiritual leaders, but they have no sense of nuance,” says a senior Chabad source. “I am not anti-Sephardi,” he explains, “but I do see that they try to turn the rebbe into something he is not – a kind of Ayatollah, God forbid.”
