Area rabbis are lamenting the commercialization of Hanukkah

Goldman said he blames overall consumerism, not just the Christmas creep, for increasingly ritzy gift requests, which he said will not be granted in his household, at least until his kids are older.

"I was standing at the Hanukkah Factory event we held last Sunday, and someone's phone rings," Goldman said. "This girl, who was 9 or 10 tops, stands up, flips out her pink Razr phone during the Hanukkah craft program and says, 'Hi. Can I call you back?' just like an adult would. Apply that to gift-giving."

But Goldman said he's not too troubled by excessive gift-giving, as long as people also focus on the Hanukkah miracle.
"People say, 'People only celebrate Hanukkah because Jewish children need something to make up for Christmas,' " Goldman said. "If that's the case, so be it. I think it's wonderful and encouraging that people are celebrating Hanukkah, which is a celebration of the small over the mighty, good over evil, light over darkness. Who doesn't want that?"
