Rabbi: Passover message badly needed

Area Jews will begin the annual Passover observance at sundown today.

The Seder, a ritual meal that tells the story of the Exodus, when Moses led the Hebrew people to freedom from Egypt, will be held in homes tonight around the world. The holiday will continue until after sundown April 20.

“The world we live in is in desperate need of an Exodus,” said Rabbi Hershel Fogelman of Congregation Tifereth Israel Sons of Jacob Chabad in Worcester.

He said people remain enslaved throughout the world in child abuse, crime, immorality and family breakdown, and are crying out for help. “In this Passover season, the Jewish people, beginning with the first Exodus, are experienced in the concept of genuine freedom. We are called to bring inspiration through the recognition of one God and the values God has imparted to the inhabitants of the earth,” the rabbi said.

“It is the secret of unity, despite differences, whereby each nation has the privilege of serving God in their own way,” Rabbi Fogelman said.

The congregation, at 22 Newton Ave., will hold its Passover Yizkor service at 10 a.m. April 20 at the synagogue. Special services will be held to honor the memory of the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust, members of the Israeli armed forces who gave their lives in defense of Israel, and Jews who gave their lives in defense of their country. Money donated during the Yizkor will benefit the Synagogue Sunshine Fund, for poor families and others in need.

Children will have a special observance at 10:30 a.m. April 19, the seventh day of Passover, at the synagogue, when they celebrate the crossing of the Red Sea by Moses and the Hebrew people. A Passover party will be held after the service.

An adult Moshiach Festival to celebrate the last day of Passover will be held at 5 p.m. April 20 at the synagogue. The program will include drinking four cups of wine or grape juice, eating shmuro matzo, comments by lay participants and community singing and discussion.

Temple Emanuel, 280 May St., will hold a second day communal Seder in the auditorium tomorrow. Admission is by reservation. The Passover Festival and Yizkor service will be held at 10 a.m. April 19.

Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Drive, has posted a complete Passover guide on its Web site at www.bethisraelworc.org/index.php.
