LITCHFIELD -- Chabad Lubavitch, Litchfield’s only synagogue, successfully raised $5,000 of toys for sick children this holiday season.
Chabad Lubavitch is located in the Village Green on Route 202 and has been in town for the past 10 years.

On Friday, Rabbi Eisenbach lit the seventh candle on the menorah, celebrating the seventh-day spirit of Hanukkah in front of a pile of donated toys.

Rabbi Eisenbach said he was an inspired young student of the Chabad and was taught the goal in life is to share the spirit of the Rebbe, which is helping people one at a time.

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, reminds the Chabad of the story of Maccabees -- how the few overcame the many and the weak vanquished the strong, Eisenbach said.

The toy drive is in its third year and began from desire to support those around us, Eisenbach said.

"In the end, good always prevails and the candles represent our own life and how we can brighten our surroundings," Eisenbach said.

Members of the community have brought in unwrapped toys to the Chabad, and to several of their Hanukkah parties, Eisenbach said.

Two girls, ages 4 and 6, attended the Tuesday celebration and donated their own Hanukkah toys for those children less fortunate, Eisenbach said.

The toys will be wrapped and given to children, ages 2 through 13, in the children’s wards at the New Milford, Torrington, Sharon and Waterbury hospitals the week after Hanukkah, Eisenbach said.

Anyone may donate to the Chabad Toy drive, Eisenbach said.

The Chabad receives all of its funds from donors and its programs and services are open to anyone, regardless of affiliation or level of observance.

"The goal is if you are a Christian, you can be a better Christian, if you are a Buddhist, you can be a better Buddhist," Eisenbach said. "It (the open Chabad) brings a peaceful ambiance in the community, because we (everyone) can learn about other religions."
